On Tuesday, June 28, pioneering rock ‘n’ roll guitarist Scotty Moore died in Nashville at age 84. Moore was part of Elvis Presley’s band from his earliest recordings at Sun Records in Memphis. Watch in the clip above as Moore (playing Elvis’ 1960 Gibson J-200) and Elvis (on Moore’s ’63 Gibson Super 400) perform “Trying To Get To You” during Elvis’ 1968 Comeback Special, recorded live at NBC Studios on June 26, 1968 — 48 short years ago.

In that clip, Moore takes a back seat to Elvis, who rips out some rowdy lead guitar licks — something Elvis rarely did. What Moore will be forever remembered for is his signature classic riff on “That’s All Right (Mama)” [below], the song that kick-started Elvis’ career and, some say, changed music forever. –Whitney Phaneuf
