It’s Thursday and this week’s throwback is from 1972, when Marc Bolan of T Rex performed “Slider” during the Garden Party sequence in the documentary Born to Boogie, directed by Ringo Starr. The scene was shot in the gardens of John Lennon’s Tittenhurst Park estate, near Ascot, England, where the final Beatles’ photo session took place in 1969. Lennon also recorded the video for the “Imagine” single there. He moved to New York in 1971 and never returned to England or the estate, which he later sold to Ringo.

The garden party sequence is thought to have been filmed on April 24, 1972.

Bolan is dressed as the Mad Hatter, and T Rex guitarist Mickey Finn as a vampire. T Rex producer Tony Visconti, who produced many classic David Bowie albums, conducts the string quartet, while hamburgers are served by Catweazle, a popular British children’s TV character played by Shakespearean actor Geoffrey Bayldon.
