Scale length is one of the most important variables in the tone and playability of a guitar, and often gets less attention than it deserves. Many classic acoustics owe part of their signature sound to scale length, and it’s also a common reason why players find certain guitars easier to play, without necessarily realizing why.

Scale length is defined as the length of the active, or “speaking,” portion of the string, suspended between the nut and the bridge, and vibrating when the open string is plucked. Care must be taken when measuring: because most bridges are compensated for intonation (for more on intonation, see the January/February 2025 issue), it’s not usually accurate to measure the open string itself. The most reliable method is to measure from the face of the nut (the surface closest to the first fret) to the 12th fret, then double that number.

There is much to say about scale length, but for the purposes of this article the key point is this: If all other things are equal (string gauge and pitch), a longer scale will have higher tension and a shorter scale will have lower tension. The frets on a shorter scale are also slightly closer together, which some players find more comfortable. Shorter scales may also allow the guitar to be built more delicately, making it livelier and more responsive with fingerstyle or gentle playing, whereas long-scale guitars, often built more robustly, can better withstand a heavy pick attack.

Longer scales have often been used to give guitars added projection and volume, as the higher tension drives the top more effectively. The oval-hole Selmer-Maccaferri guitars, for example, had scale lengths as long as 26.4 inches to maximize projection. Conversely, many smaller guitars have shorter scales;
0- and 00-size Martins, for instance, often feature 24.9-inch scales instead of the 25.4 inches typical of dreadnoughts. Tracing exact historical origins of body-size and scale-length pairings is tricky, since the major makers went through several iterations before arriving at what we now think of as standard models.

The evolution from 12-fret to 14-fret body styles was similarly complex. The 1929 introduction of the 14-fret OM model is often considered the milestone, inspired by virtuoso guitarist Perry Bechtel. Yet examples of 14-fret designs predate the OM, most notably the Gibson L-5 archtop.

Leaving aside history, why might today’s player choose a 12-fret versus a 14-fret guitar? The first and most obvious advantage of the 14-fret is greater upper-fret access—enough of a benefit that 14-fret instruments have become the default for most makers, with cutaways providing even more reach.

But 12-fret guitars have a distinctive voice owing to their neck-to-body relationship: on these instruments, the bridge sits closer to the circle defined by the guitar’s lower bout. This bridge placement, at the center of the top’s most active area, can deliver a full, round, warm sound, as it drives the top closer to its monopole vibrational mode, akin to the motion of a speaker cone.

By contrast, shifting the neck forward to accommodate the 14-fret design also shifts the bridge forward, toward the waist of the guitar and away from that monopole. The result can be a tighter, more focused, and sometimes more articulate tone, though it may lose some of the warmth and depth of the 12-fret design. Builders have modified top bracing to offset this, and many fine 14-fret guitars achieve admirable warmth and depth. Still, some musicians are willing to give up upper-fret access in exchange for the tonal qualities of a 12-fret instrument.

It is very different from my 14 guitars. It’s just a different voice and really fun to play and easy on the hands too. Thanks for this great article.
