I just got my tickets to Solfest in Northwest England, and I'm very excited to see Kate play. What a vocalist, and I really like her fairly simple style of playing. I think she must do a lot of stuff in drop D or DADGAD, but whatever it is she gets great sound out of her guitar.

I don't know anybody else playing at this festival, but from the descriptions it sounds like loads of fun. Anybody know of any of these bands?

Shooglenifty are excellent!! - a scottish band, fiddle, mandolin and souped-up banjo [banjojax] - dance into a frenzy with them - they are wonderful.
Flook - 2 flutes, a guitar, a bohdran - I saw them @ Celtic Connections - they are great, wonderful tunes and craic.
Enjoy yerself.

I recently picked up her latest album. I wish she'd do a tour over here!

Thanks for the info, Allan. I'll be looking forward to seeing them as well. Are you anywhere near Glasgow?

Peace--I only have the latest album myself, but I'm looking forward to getting the others and hopefully getting them signed at the festival. Kate is playing with her husband, who I've heard is also an excellent musician. I'll let you know how it went.

Just outside, in a rural village on the south side of the city.

Yes, it's too bad Kate doesn't tour across the pond anymore. She has an aversion to flying and has no problem gettings gigs in the UK, so . . .
Her recently released live DVD is essential for those of us who miss Kate (and Johnny and co.) over here.

BTW, she mostly plays in double-dropped D: D A D G B D.

Oh wow--I just thought she didn't have any thing scheduled over here right now. That's terrible! I have never seen her in concert, but I would love to. I guess I'll have to pick up the DVD and hope I can someday afford a trip to England!

Thanks for the info on Kate playing in double dropped D. I just noticed you had written about her in "What They Play" on the AG website, and that tuning explains much.

I agree that it's too bad Kate doesn't travel to the US any more, but that does make it all the more special that I'll be seeing her here in about 1.5 weeks.

I've been getting emails from the Solfest people since I got my tickets, and from the info in those, Kate and John both sound like very nice people. As an example, Kate is quoted as saying, "I was glad to be of help and am really looking forward to appearing at the festival."

The statement comes after Kate was asked to fill in for another performer who couldn't make it, and is pretty amazing coming from someone as well known as Kate is over here. She could just as easily have said, "You're damn lucky to have me" (which is a true statement, btw).

BTW, hip cat that I am, I've taken to calling it "Dropped D Squared" rather than double dropped D.

Feel free to use that anytime you'd like. No royalty charges or anything.

I am such a huge fan of Kate's -- hope I get to see her someday in person. In the meantime, I take heart that my musical partner, Barbara Piper, and I can find joy in doing some of Kate's great songs.

Here is Barbara doing one just last weekend!

Ok, Bill, fix the link or you're in big trouble--I want to hear this! My wife and I had a ball recording "I Courted a Sailor" and a few other tunes a couple years ago as a gift to our parents.

I saw a documentary on TV a couple of nights ago about a folk festival that had a small interview with her and some live footage. I love the way she talks let alone her singing and playing. I must fins out when she is playing near me. By the way, I am one of the lucky ones to live this side of the pond!

We just picked up the "Live at Leeds" DVD and it is absolutely fantastic (thanks, Scott, for mentioning that). The full concert is spectacular, with amazing sound and musicianship, and her voice... "Britain's Best Voice" comes close, but doesn't even begin to describe the combination of passion and stage presence and humor and appropriateness of her vocals, interaction with her band, etc. Then you have the chance to listen to her very cool Yorkshire accent during several great interview sessions, backstage documentaries, etc.

Of course, listening to her husband's Glasgow accent is every bit as satisfying, but he's not quite as cute (at least to me). My wife thinks he's cute because of his personality and musical skill, and that comes across very well on the DVD also.

Actually, my wife is just as addicted to Kate as I am, and we get to see her (and at least John, I've heard) this weekend.

I don't care if it pours rain the entire time, it's going to be a blast.

Kate has already been a great source of inspiration to my daughter, who is only 8 but already loves these old folk songs that Kate does so well. Now that I know that Bill Hammond wears his black dress and does Kate songs, I will definitely tell my daughter to be careful while searching for her on the internet. Some things can scar you for life.

Hey, Tim, how ya doing?

Sadly, Barb wears all the dresses now -- she is a tad curvier than I am!

I am back to kaftans and braids, kinda doing the essential bohemian look.
