joins Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark O’Connor on 'Slumber,

Travelers on Mississippi state Highway 7 may notice
something new on the west side of the road in the small town
of Avalon: a state historic marker paying tribute to
bluesman Mississippi John Hurt. At the installation
ceremony, held on July 7, shortly after the second annual
Mississippi John Hurt Fourth of July Blues and Gospel
Festival, Art Browning, curator of the Mississippi John Hurt
Museum; Scottish zoologist Phil Ratcliffe; and Greenwood
musician and author Steve Cheseborough performed songs by
Hurt.

TIPS ON LICKS

AG reader Gillian Gutenberg of Inkster, Michigan, says 'I've
been taking lessons and playing for years, but I'm still at
a loss when it comes to playing leads while jamming with
friends. Am I supposed to memorize all the licks I see in
the books? And how am I supposed to maintain the beat when
I'm playing leads?'

Our music editor, Andrew DuBrock, offers this advice:
Memorizing all the licks in a book isn't a bad idea, but
it's kind of like memorizing all of the words in a
dictionary--if you don't try them out in context, you're
only partway there. It's more manageable to learn just a few
licks at once. Pick a few that you really like and get them
under your fingers. Then, try playing them over chord
progressions; experiment with how they work rhythmically by
starting them on different beats. (If you're having trouble
keeping time while playing licks, it can help to tap your
foot or practice with a metronome.) Soon, the licks will
begin to feel like they’re yours. Then try them out at your
jams and eventually move on to more licks. Keep things
simple. Trying to learn too many things at once can be
overwhelming. For more on developing your lead licks, check
out David Hamburger’s 'Lead On!' lesson in the new issue of
our annual magazine for beginners, Play Guitar!
Magazine.

ON THE WEB

AG's website, Acoustic Guitar Central, made Forbes
magazine’s Summer 2004 Best of the Web list. Forbes had this
to say about the site: 'Unlike most other guitar magazine
sites, which use the Web mostly to tease their print
content, Acoustic Guitar provides the deepest archive of
lessons, gear reviews, and interviews with influential
players.' The only criticism of the site, 'cumbersome
navigation,' was made before AG's new streamlined, easy-to-
use site, www.acousticguitar.com, debuted in August. Check
it out at
