NEWS AND NOTES
On July 30, New York City posthumously honored folksinger
Dave Van Ronk, known to many as 'the mayor of MacDougal
Street,' by renaming a portion of Greenwich Village’s
Sheridan Square in his honor. The ceremony coincided with
both Van Ronk’s 67th birthday and the Smithsonian Folkways
release of '… And the Tin Pan Bended and the Story
Ended… '--a 24-song recording of Van Ronk’s final concert
from October 2001.

Louisville, Kentucky. The EBMA has recently committed itself

literally swing into the Whidbey Island Center for the Arts
in Langley, Washington, for DjangoFest Northwest 2004,
September 30-October 3. DjangoFest Northeast follows soon
thereafter, October 15-17, at the Sellersville Theater in
Sellersville, Pennsylvania, featuring Jorgenson, the Ritary
Ensemble, Stephane Wrembel, Ameranouche!!, the Hot Club of

DVD DILEMMA
Acoustic Guitar reader Dedrick Morris of Springfield,
Illinois, was given the Rosenberg Trio’s 'Live in Samois'
DVD, but it is in the European PAL format. He asks, 'What
options are available to make PAL DVDs playable on NTSC
televisions?'
Henry Kaiser offers this advice: There are two issues
involved in trying to play DVDs from other countries: video
standard and DVD region. NTSC (National Television System
Committee) is the video standard used in the US, Canada,
Japan, Mexico, and several other countries. The PAL (Phase
Alternating Line) and SECAM (Système Électronique pour
Couleur avec Mémoire) standards are what you typically find
in Europe and most of the rest of world. Most DVD players do
convert these standards internally. What you are probably
running up against is an incompatible region code.
Corporations have divided the world into six discrete DVD
regions, and the internal software in a DVD player is
usually set to play only DVDs from the region in which the
player was purchased. This becomes increasingly problematic
as more and more of us track down interesting music DVDs
from other countries. However, many DVD players allow you to
reset the service code to all-region play. An Internet
search (your particular model of DVD player + 'code' + 'all-
region play') should turn up information on how to program
this change. If your DVD player does not allow for internal
standards conversion, you might consider purchasing an all-
region-play or code-free DVD player that will play any DVD.
They can be relatively inexpensive ($100-$200), and it would
cost you almost that much to pay to have a foreign region-
encoded DVD converted to be playable on your current
machine.

ON THE WEB: RADIO FROM SCOTLAND
You know it’s a new information age when you can tune in to
a radio show that broadcasts from the fishing village of
Ullapool in Dingwall near Inverness on the Cromarty Firth.
(Dingwall is a three-hour drive from Edinburgh, Glasgow, and
John O’Groats, Scotland.) Though the eye-popping web pages
can be difficult to navigate, 'The Medicine Show' webcasts
feature a unique variety of local Scottish musicians and
international artists. A recent playlist included songs by
Garnet Rogers, Inga McIroy, Kenny Brady ('the Celtic
Cajun'), Roy Orbison, Hank Williams, and the Coal Porters
(featuring Sid Griffin). Tune in at
