ARE YOU GOING TO FINISH THAT?

Acoustic Guitar reader Zach Mullin, from Salt Lake City,
Utah, wrote in for advice on removing the pickguard and
refinishing the top on his Washburn Millennium 2000. 'I want
to sand the spruce top without harming the inlay work, and
put on a clear pickguard. I know I'll need to put on a new
finish, probably some kind of lacquer. How long would a job
like this take me?' he asked.

Frank Ford offered this caveat and advice:
I can't stress enough how big a project you're talking
about. Before you even think of starting, do yourself a big
favor and get a copy of Guitar Finishing Step-by-Step by Dan
Erlewine and Don MacRostie (Stewart-MacDonald). It’s a great
resource--the bible for guitar finishers. I believe the
finish on your Washburn is a catalyzed polymer and extremely
difficult to remove by any means. All in all, I suggest you
entrust this job to a professional. Find Stewart-MacDonald
at
http://www.stewmac.com.

Music includes links to more than 20 North American download

served by the likes of Apple, Amazon, and Real Networks,'

Calabash recently featured downloads and new CDs by Bebel
Gilberto, Steve Earle, the Paris Combo, Gigi, and Ba
