BULLETIN BOARD New Instructional DVD for Guitarists Corey Harris. Teaches Blues Guitar, from Mississippi to Mali On his groundbreaking 2003 CD Mississippi to Mali, blues guitarist and singer Corey Harris explored the connections between delta blues and African folk music. In this excellent DVD, which should appeal to fans of both genres, he teaches seven tunes in depth, covering ragtime, delta-style and slide guitar, as well as African fingerstyle. The linchpin of the session is his demonstration of Skip James’ “Special Rider Blues.” First, Harris plays it in the Mississippi style, then he “Africanizes” it by adding chokes, mutes, trills, and other touches. All the songs are written out in tablature and standard notation and close-ups show Harris’ picking and fretting hands. This is an engaging lesson for intermediate and more advanced guitarists who want to add some cross-cultural spice and authentic blues chops to their playing.
