NEW AT ACOUSTICGUITAR.COM

The March issue of Acoustic Guitar is on newsstands now.
Access these features, articles, and lessons online:
(To access special reader/subscriber features, including audio files and lessons, enter spring when prompted.)

LA FEMME GUITARA: Patty Larkin turns the spotlight on women guitarists with La Guitara, a wide-ranging collection of captivating performances by female instrumentalists. Read Dan Ouellette’s interview with Larkin and tour mates Kaki King, Muriel Anderson, and Mimi Fox.

NEW GEAR: Teja Gerken tests the new Epiphone AJ-500RC 12-Fret and finds that its vintage vibe, remarkably complex tones, and unusual dimensions come together in a dreadnought that’s well suited to fingerstyle playing. Listen online as Teja puts the Epiphone through its paces.

HERE'S HOW: Writing from experience, Jack Tuttle says that once you’ve found them a teacher, you can “Help Your Kids Learn to Play” by setting realistic goals, minimizing frustration, keeping instruments handy, and finding music that will inspire them.

LESSONS AND MUSIC TO PLAY:
(To access special reader/subscriber features, including audio files and lessons, enter spring when prompted.)

- THE BASICS: Open-String Blues. Are your blues solos sounding like a bunch of scale fragments? Pete Madsen shows you how to add open strings to the pentatonic blues scale and create a whole new batch of blues licks.

- WOODSHED: Expand Your Fingerstyle Arrangements. Eric Lugosch helps you cultivate your own arrangements with a few simple techniques: playing the melody in two octaves, experimenting with different bass lines, and creating variations with melodic fragments.

- LICK OF THE MONTH: Andrew Hardin, Tom Russell’s longtime lead guitarist, demonstrates one of his hot, country-rock lead lines, full of multiple slurs and ringing scale tones.

LUTHIER'S WORKBENCH: Michael Wright delves into the history and legacy of the Larson Brothers, “Windy City Innovators” who built some of the finest guitars of the early 20th century. Through brands like Prairie State and Euphonon, their unique instruments provide a tonally rich alternative to vintage favorites.

READER'S RIG: Reformed headbanger/electronic-raver Randy Collins slaps, taps, and delicately fingerpicks his treasured McIlroy A25C grand concert.

Each month we feature one of our readers’ rigs in the magazine. To be considered, send a description of your setup to editors.ag@stringletter.com

Also in the March issue: A feature lesson with LEO KOTTKE, who, along with John Fahey, Bert Jansch, and John Renbourn, invented contemporary fingerstyle guitar in the early '70s. After nearly 40 years as a soloist, he's recently been reshaping his music in a duo with former Phish bassist Mike Gordon. In this exclusive interview, the veteran guitarist talks to Teja Gerken about learning to play with other musicians, tone production, and picking technique.

Plus reviews of a new acoustic-electric guitar by Breedlove and the SansAmp Par Driver DI; music to Leo Kottke’s “Cherry County,” John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” and Cream’s “Strange Brew”; a profile of veteran country-blues guitarist Terry Robb; and reviews of new CDs by Wilco, Jake Shimabukuro, Lenny Breau, David Wilcox and Nancy Pettit, and others.

Subscribers gain access to even more online features, including audio files and lessons, via the password included in each issue of Acoustic Guitar.

New Instructional DVD for Guitarists

Corey Harris. Teaches Blues Guitar, from Mississippi to Mali

On his groundbreaking 2003 CD Mississippi to Mali, blues guitarist and singer Corey Harris explored the connections between delta blues and African folk music. In this excellent DVD, which should appeal to fans of both genres, he teaches seven tunes in depth, covering ragtime, delta-style and slide guitar, as well as African fingerstyle. The linchpin of the session is his demonstration of Skip James’ “Special Rider Blues.” First, Harris plays it in the Mississippi style, then he “Africanizes” it by adding chokes, mutes, trills, and other touches. All the songs are written out in tablature and standard notation and close-ups show Harris’ picking and fretting hands. This is an engaging lesson for intermediate and more advanced guitarists who want to add some cross-cultural spice and authentic blues chops to their playing. (Homespun Tapes)
