Veteran fingerstylist John Fahey enters the realm of "pure industrial noise" with his CD City of Refuge (Tim/Kerr). In the tradition of his groundbreaking Takoma Records, Fahey is also starting Revenant, a new independent label that will feature such artists as Derek Bailey, Cecil Taylor, the Stanley Brothers, and Roscoe Holcomb.
John Lomax, folk-song collector and father of Alan Lomax, is the subject of a new biography entitled Last Cavalier: The Life and Times of John A. Lomax, 1867-1948, by Nolan Porterfield (University of Illinois Press).
New York-based Arkadia Jazz Records will release a completely remastered album of Django Reinhardt and Coleman Hawkins next year.
The new Philadelphia label Sliced Bread, headed by famed folk deejay Gene Shay, is releasing an anthology of Phil Ochs songs sung by more than a dozen artists. Two notable new releases from Smithsonian Folkways are Woody Guthrie's This Land Is Your Land: The Asch Recordings Vol. 1 (which includes the first-ever recording of "This Land Is Your Land") and Leadbelly's Bourgeois Blues: Lead Belly Legacy Vol. 2, which includes Leadbelly's commentary on the songs and an essay about him by Guthrie.
The Original Musical Instrument Co. (a division of Gibson) is opening a Dobro Custom, Art, and Historic division at its Huntington Beach, California, facility, where custom guitar and bass models will be designed and produced. Gibson says that the factory will continue to produce a line of standard Dobro guitars as well, including metal-bodies, round- and square-neck wood-bodies, acoustics and electrics.
PoetMan Records has introduced the Acoustic Rainbow CD Sampler, a series of compilations of songs by folk, blues, acoustic rock, and bluegrass artists on independent or acoustic labels. Artists/labels pay $395 for inclusion on the samplers, which are for airplay only and are sent free to over 680 radio stations and 840 acoustic radio shows in the U.S., Canada, Australia, the U.K., Ireland, and Germany.
