Just what everyone's been waiting for: "Macarena--Country Version" by the GrooveGrass Boyz is climbing the charts. The Boyz include Doc Watson, Del McCoury, and Mac Wiseman.

Capping off a year of constant plaudits, Joni Mitchell was presented the 1996 Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Academy of Songwriters in December.

Merle Haggard hosts a new, two-hour weekly radio show called The Road I Traveled on which he plays "seldom-heard" records by and interviews with a wide range of artists who influenced him, from Bing Crosby to Bill Monroe.

Vintage Guitar Books has released the fifth edition of the Vintage Guitar Magazine Price Guide. Bruce Cockburn has signed on with Rykodisc, and his 23rd album, The Charity of Night, is due out in February.

Laurence Juber and Preston Reed are working on a duo album to be released in March. Juber's solo album Mosaic will appear in early summer, and Homespun Tapes has also released Adventures in Fingerstyle Guitar: Arrangements and Techniques of Laurence Juber, a two-video set.

Mel Bay Publications has released Mastering the Guitar, a new guitar method by William Bay and Mike Christiansen. It teaches both flatpicking and fingerpicking and covers a broad range of musical styles.

Centerstream Publishing has released The Ultimate Musician's Reference Handbook, which includes the histories of more than 3,500 musicians and chronological listings of their albums in print. For more information, call (714) 779-9390.

EVENTS

The first annual National Slide Guitar Competition and Festival is scheduled for August 22&endash;24 at the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, North Carolina. Events will include competitions in acoustic slide, electric slide, and lap and pedal steel; workshops; concerts; and a trade expo. The Museum of American History and guitar collector Scott Chinery are sponsoring a new exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., entitled "Electrified, Amplified, and Deified: From Frying Pan to Flying V." More than half of the instruments displayed are acoustic guitars that were innovatively designed to increase volume prior to the invention of electrical amplification. The exhibit, which runs through April 1, features instruments from Chinery's collection, including Larsons, Martins, D'Angelicos, D'Aquistos, and Strombergs.

The first annual Chet Atkins' Musician Days will take place June 25&endash;29 in Nashville. Atkins will host the event, which will highlight the work of lesser-known musicians rather than stars. For more information, write to TomKats, 408 Broadway, Nashville, TN 37203.
