Steve Tilston, Such and Such

By Danny Carnahan

Over his 30 years of touring the British and American folk circuits, Tilston has earned a reputation for original songs marked by unfailing insight and humanity. He delivers them with a buttery tenor voice and unfussy, always-appropriate guitar work. Opening his latest release with the sweetly optimistic anthem “Rare Thing,” Tilston is better than ever. With the help of such studio pros as bassist Maartin Allcock and saxophonist Andy Sheppard, Tilston mixes moods and tempos, whipping his caffeinated way through “I Need a Cup of Coffee” then dropping to the dead-slow delivery of the chilling character study in “The Sniper’s Tale.” He finishes with his only traditional track, “The Constant Lover,” a waltz built around a fingerstyle lick that should have all English folk enthusiasts happily woodshedding after one listen. With woodshedding in mind, Tilston also just released a lovely tab songbook simply titled Steve Tilston Music Book (www.steve-tilston.co.uk), which includes notation for two tracks from this new CD and 11 more spanning 15 years.
