Hailing from upstate New York, Sean Rowe has emerged in the last several years as a compelling singer, songwriter and interpreter of others’ songs. His rich and resonant baritone works equally well on deep blues and emotional folk ballads, and his straightforward guitar style shows the influence of players from John Lee Hooker to Johnny Cash.

When he stopped by AG’s offices for this Session, Rowe offered a stunning trifecta of tunes: the blues-soaked “Shine My Diamond Ring,” the haunting “Madman” (both from his 2014 album, Madman); and a moving version of the Sade song “By Your Side,” taken from Rowe’s 2015 EP, Her Songs, which consists of cover versions of tunes by a half-dozen contemporary women songwriters, including Cat Power, Neko Case, Regina Spektor, Lucinda Williams, and Feist.
