Former Fairport Convention vocalist Iain Matthews talks about learning to play the guitar and plays a song, “In Paradise,” from his latest solo album, The Art of Obscurity.

On 46 albums–three with the influential British folk rock outfit Fairport Convention, and 43 either on his own or with other projects–Matthews has honed a distinctive songwriting style. When he left Fairport, where he collaborated with guitarist Richard Thompson, Matthews realized he needed to learn guitar in order to compose his songs.

“The more I got into it, the more I realized what a valuable songwriting tool the guitar is,” Matthews says.

These days, he has settled on a Martin 000-28 EC.

“I just think they’re making such beautiful sounding instruments these days,” Matthews says of Martin.
